Garcia v. San Antonio Metropolitan Transit Authority

US Supreme Court decision of 1985 dealing with the imposition of federal labour regulations on the states as employers. Prior to this decision, the states had enjoyed immunity from the Federal Labor Standards Act under the Tenth Amendment provision that all rights not explicitly reserved for the federal government belong to the states. The Court ruled, however, that state employees are protected by federal minimum-wage and maximum-hours laws, deciding on the grounds that the judiciary is not responsible for safeguarding state sovereignty.
