Gardelli, Lamberto (1915-1998)

Italian conductor. He studied in Pesaro and was assistant to Serafin in Rome, making his debut there in 1944 with Verdi's La Traviata. He led the Swedish Opera, in Stockholm, 1946-55, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra 1955-61, and conducted opera in Budapest and Berlin. He appeared at Glyndebourne 1964-68, with Verdi's Macbeth and Donizetti's Anna Bolena, and at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1966, with Giordano's Andrea Chénier. He was a regular performer at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1969, and made his debut there with Verdi's Otello; he also led Bellini's Norma in 1980. He conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983 and the Budapest Opera 1990-92, performing Verdi's La Forza del Destino/The Force of Destiny and Rossini's Moïse.
