Gardiner

Town in Kennebec County, southwest Maine; population (1990) 6,700. It is situated on the Kennebec River, 10 km/6 mi south of Augusta. The city was a mid-19th-century industrial centre with large wharves and saw, grist, and lumber mills; it engaged in fishing and ice cutting, shipping ice and fish. It now manufactures footwear, paper, and wood products.

The poet Edwin Arlington Robinson made Gardiner, his boyhood home, the ‘Tilbury Town’ of his poems.

Gardiner

Town in Ulster County, southeast New York; population (1990) 4,300. It is situated in the Shawangunk Mountains, 29 km/18 mi southwest of Kingston. Gardiner is home to the largest skydiving centre in the northeast. Settled in the 17th century, it contains the remains of a gristmill from this period.
