Gardiner, John Eliot (1943- )

English conductor. He first made his mark establishing the Monteverdi Choir in 1966, which he continues to conduct. He is an authority on 17th- and 18th-century music, and an exponent of the authenticity movement. He has also recorded modern music.

He was knighted in 1998.
