Gardiner| Town in Kennebec County, southwest Maine; population (1990) 6,700. It is situated on the Kennebec River, 10 km/6 mi south of Augusta. The city was a mid-19th-century industrial centre with large wharves and saw, grist, and lumber mills; it engaged in fishing and ice cutting, shipping ice and fish. It now manufactures footwear, paper, and wood products. |

Gardiner| Town in Ulster County, southeast New York; population (1990) 4,300. It is situated in the Shawangunk Mountains, 29 km/18 mi southwest of Kingston. Gardiner is home to the largest skydiving centre in the northeast. Settled in the 17th century, it contains the remains of a gristmill from this period. |
