Gardner, Jake

Gardner, Jake (1947– )

US baritone. He sang Valentin at Houston in 1975 and created James Stewart in Musgrave's Mary, Queen of Scots at Edinburgh in 1977. He appeared with the Boston Opera in 1979, in the first US performance of Tippett's The Ice Break, and sang Escamillo in Peter Brook's version of Bizet's Carmen throughout Europe and at the Lincoln Center, New York. He was principal baritone at the Cologne Opera from 1989, and made his Glyndebourne debut in 1991, as Guglielmo. He sang in the Weill/Grosz concert at the 1993 London Promenade concerts.
