Garo Hills

Hills in Meghalaya state, northeast India, rising to 1,400 m/4,600 ft. Heavily forested and with a high rainfall, they are the home of the Garo ethnic group, who number nearly 400,000 and grow mainly rice and cotton. Coal and some petroleum are exploited here. Tura is the administrative headquarters of this region. The Khasi Hills and the Jaintia Hills are home to the two other main ethnic groups in the region.
