Garofalo, adopted name of Benvenuto Tisio (1481-1559)

Italian painter, active in Ferrara. He was an eclectic artist, much influenced by Raphael Sanzio, whom he met in Rome in 1509. Works by Garofalo can be seen in churches in Ferrara, including the Church of S Niccolo, for which he painted a Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus (1520).
