Garrett, Finis

Garrett, Finis (James) (1875–1956)

US politician. A newspaperman and lawyer before going to the US House of Representatives as the Democrat representative of Tennessee (1905–29), he was a fiscal conservative but an internationalist who supported the League of Nations. Deprived of a federal judgeship in 1921 by the Republican majority in Congress, he championed the Democratic party on nationwide speaking tours. He became a judge of the Federal Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (1929–55). He was born in Ore Springs, Tennessee.
