Gasparo de Salo (1540/02–1609)

Italian instrument-maker, founder of the Brescian school of violin-making. He was, after Nicolò Amati, the second great maker whose instruments have survived. He also made viols and is especially noted for his violas and double basses.

He was probably born in Salo, the son of Francesco da Bertolotti, a violinist or violin-maker.
