Gastonia

City and administrative headquarters of Gaston County, southwest North Carolina, USA; population (2000) 66,300. It is situated in the central Piedmont, on the Catawba River, 29 km/18 mi west-northwest of Charlotte. Since the construction in 1848 of a cotton mill, Gastonia has been a leading US textile-manufacturing centre. In 1929, several people were killed during a bitter strike at the Loray Mills; organizers were convicted of conspiracy to murder the police chief. Other industries include the manufacture of machinery, oil filters, corrugated boxes, plastics, and electronic equipment.
