proselyte

Convert to a religion; in particular, to Judaism. The religions keenest to make converts are Christianity (see mission) and Islam.

In the early years of the Roman Empire, many Roman citizens of high rank became proselytes; and in the 8th century the ruler of the Khazars in central Asia established Judaism as the state religion. In the 1940s a whole Italian village became proselytes and emigrated to Israel.
