Gath

One of the five royal cities of the Philistines, situated near the borders of Judah, and the birthplace of Goliath.

During the early years of the Kingdom of Jerusalem Gath was fortified by the Crusaders. It was taken by Saladin, sultan of Egypt, 1191, but was recaptured in the next year by Richard I the Lionheart. The exact site of the town is no longer known, but Tell-as-Safi is believed to occupy it.
