Gatlinburg

City in Sevier County, east Tennessee; population (1990) 3,400. It is located 47 km/29 mi southeast of Knoxville, along the Little Pigeon River. It is a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and has developed a sizeable tourist industry, focusing on crafts. Mount Le Conte, 10 km/6 mi to the southeast, is one of the highest peaks in the Appalachian system; height 2,011 m/6,593 ft.
