Gatti, Daniele (1962– )

Italian conductor. He studied in Milan and made his debut there in 1982, with Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco/Joan of Arc. His La Scala debut was in 1988, with Rossini's L'Occasione fa il ladro/Opportunity Makes a Thief, and he conducted Bianca e Falliero at the Pesaro Festival in 1989. He made his US debut in Chicago in 1991, with Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and led Bellini's I Puritani/The Puritans at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1992, returning with the house premiere of Verdi's Due Foscari in 1995. He has also led concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras. He was appointed musical director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, in London, in 1995, the same year that he conducted Butterfly at the New York Metropolitan Opera House.
