GatwickSite of Gatwick Airport, West Sussex, England, situated 42 km/26 mi south of central London. Designated as London's second airport in 1954, it is now one of the city's three international airport facilities. Nearly 30 million passengers a year pass through its two terminals. A rail connection links Gatwick to Victoria Station, London.

The UK aviation regulator proposed increasing airline charges at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports, a move opposed by carriers, even as the regulator recommended scrapping price controls at Stansted Airport. Trudging at midnight along Gatwick's deserted corridors to board a six hour late flight to Madrid, it struck me that Gatwick epitomises all that is worst about the modern airport experience. Its inaugural flight to London Gatwick, scheduled for the previous day, was canceled when Russian authorities temporarily denied overflight rights. |
