Guwahati

Chief town in Assam state, northeast India; population (1991) 577,600. Situated 515 km/320 mi northeast of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, it is the largest town in Assam and the business capital of the region. It is an important trading centre and has a refinery for processing locally-produced petroleum. It has many temple ruins on its surrounding hills, and is a Hindu place of pilgrimage. Guwahati was an ancient seat of learning; its modern university dates from 1948.

It was ceded to Britain in 1826 and was the centre of British administration until 1874, when this was moved to Shillong.
