gaullism

Political philosophy deriving from the views of Charles de Gaulle but not necessarily confined to Gaullist parties, or even to France. Its basic tenets are the creation and preservation of a strongly centralized state and an unwillingness to enter into international obligations at the expense of national interests. President Chirac's Rally for the Republic is an influential neo-Gaullist party in contemporary France, and was the first main political party in France to appoint a woman as head, when Michèle Alliot-Marie was elected its leader in November 1999.
