gaullismPolitical philosophy deriving from the views of Charles de Gaulle but not necessarily confined to Gaullist parties, or even to France. Its basic tenets are the creation and preservation of a strongly centralized state and an unwillingness to enter into international obligations at the expense of national interests. President Chirac's Rally for the Republic is an influential neo-Gaullist party in contemporary France, and was the first main political party in France to appoint a woman as head, when Michèle Alliot-Marie was elected its leader in November 1999.
