Gavazzeni, Gianandrea (1909–1996)

Italian conductor and composer. He studied in Rome and Milan, as a pupil of Pizzetti and Pilati, and was also active as a critic. He conducted Donizetti's Anna Bolena at Glyndebourne in 1965, and was musical director at La Scala 1965–68. He made his US debut in Chicago in 1957, with Puccini's La Bohème, and led Verdi's Il trovatore/The Troubadore at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1976.

Works

opera Paolo e Virginia (after Saint-Pierre, 1935); oratorio Canti per Sant' Alessandro (1934); choral triptych; Symphonic Prelude, Three Episodes, etc. for orchestra; concertos for violin and for cello; chamber music.
