Gaviniès, Pierre (1728-1800)

French violinist and composer. His compositions for the violin, including Les Vingt-Quatre Matinées (1800), were the most demanding pieces in the violin repertory before Paganini.

He made his first appearance in Paris in 1741, at the Concert Spirituel, of which he was conductor 1773-77. He was professor of violin at the Paris Conservatory from its foundation in 1795.
