Gavrilov, Andrei (1955– )

Russian pianist. He won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1974, made his British debut in 1976, and has since appeared with all the leading London orchestras. His New York debut was in April 1985. He is widely admired in Bach, Chopin, Prokofiev, and Ravel. After defecting from Russia he decided to return in 1986, under an agreement in which he was allowed artistic freedom.
