Gaya

Ancient city in Bihar state, northeast India, 140 km/87 mi south of Patna; population (2001) 383,200. Situated on the holy River Phalgu, it is a centre of pilgrimage for Buddhists and Hindus with many temples and shrines; the Vishnupad temple enshrines the footprint of Vishnu. A bo tree at Bodhgaya is said to be a direct descendant of the original tree under which the Buddha sat. There is a tourist centre.
