Famagusta

Seaport on the east coast of Cyprus, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus; population (district, 1994) 67,200. It was the chief port of the island until the Turkish invasion 1974.

It has many ruined Gothic churches, the result of its having been taken from the Venetians by the Turks 1571. It is also famous for Othello's Tower, on whose story Shakespeare based his play.
