Geelong

Industrial port on Corio Bay in south Victoria, Australia, 76 km/47 mi southwest of Melbourne; population (1996) 125,382. Geelong is Victoria's second city, and industries include oil refining, canning, wool scouring works, and the production of aluminium, motor vehicles, textiles, glass, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, cement, and aerated waters. It is also a centre for the grain and wool trades.

Geelong has a university (1974) and an exclusive boarding school. The National Wool Museum is located here. The customs house is the oldest wooden building in Victoria.
