Gävle

Seaport and capital of Gävleborg county, Sweden, on the Gulf of Bothnia; population (2005 est) 68,700. The town is situated at the mouth of the River Gävle, 150 km/93 mi northwest of Stockholm, and is spread over the riverbanks and two islands. Shipbuilding, textiles, machinery, and pottery are the main industries. The chief exports are iron goods, timber, and wood pulp.
