Geikie, Archibald

Geikie, Archibald (1835–1924)

Scottish geologist. He joined the Geological Survey in 1855 and became director for Scotland in 1867, and in 1871 professor of geology at Edinburgh University, holding both appointments until 1882, when he was made director general of the Geological Survey of the UK. He was the brother of geologist James Geikie.

His publications include The Story of a Boulder (1858), Scenery of Scotland (1865), Memoir of Sir R Murchison (1875), Textbook of Geology (1882), The Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain (1897), and Charles Darwin as Geologist (1909). His autobiography A Long Life's Work was published in 1924.
