Geikie, James (1839–1915)

Scottish geologist, the brother of Archibald Geikie. He served on the Geological Survey of Scotland from 1861 to 1882, when he succeeded his brother as professor of geology at Edinburgh, holding the post until 1914.

His writings include The Great Ice Age in its Relation to the Antiquity of Man (1874), Historical Geology (1875), Prehistoric Europe (1881), Outlines of Geology (1886), and Structural and Field Geology (1905). He was born and educated in Edinburgh.
