Gelon (c. 540–478 BC)

Tyrant of Syracuse. Gelon took power in Gela, then capital of Sicily, in 491, and then transferred the capital to Syracuse. He refused to help the mainland Greeks against Xerxes in 480 BC, but later the same year defeated the Carthaginians under Hamilcar Barca at Himera, on the north coast of Sicily, leaving Syracuse as the leading city in the western Greek world.
