Gelsenkirchen

Industrial city in the Ruhr District, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the Rhine-Herne Canal and the River Emscher, 25 km/15 mi west of Dortmund; population (1995) 291,800. It has iron, steel, chemical, and glass industries, but the decline of these traditional industries has resulted in high unemployment and population decline, from a peak of 382,840 in 1961.

The Ruhr zoo is here. The city was heavily bombed during World War II.
