Gemara

In Judaism, part of the Talmud, a compilation of ancient Jewish law. It comprises legal discussions on the Mishnah (earlier rabbinical commentary on the law) which were made in the schools of Palestine and Babylon from the 3rd and 4th centuries. The various interpretations were written down and collected together as the Gemara, and embodied in the Jerusalem Talmud (around AD 500) and the more authoritative Babylonian, or Balvi, Talmud (around AD 600).
