Gemayel, Amin |
0.01 sec. |
Gemayel, Amin (1942– )Lebanese politician, a Maronite Christian; president 1982–88. He succeeded his brother, president-elect Bechir Gemayel (1947–1982), on his assassination on 14 September 1982. The Lebanese parliament was unable to agree on a successor when his term expired, so separate governments were formed under rival Christian and Muslim leaders. Following the end of his term of office as president, Gemayel was largely instrumental in ending Lebanon's civil war in 1989. How to thank TFD for its existence?
