They suggest that part of the gender disparity may be that black women, who are more often part of the labor force than white women, are suffering from the expectation that they will be both breadwinners and homemakers. Biological mechanisms, such as the endocrine shift during the menstrual cycle, or menopause, have been suggested as responsible for this gender disparity (Haggerty, Ness, Kelsey, & Waterer, 2003; Vrieze, Postma, & Kerstjens, 2003). Gender disparity within the top levels of corporate America is so entrenched that it rarely draws much attention anymore. |
