General Electric Company

US technology and services conglomerate, founded in 1890 as the Edison General Electric Light to back the experiments of the inventor Thomas Edison. In 1892 the company merged with a competitor (Thomas-Houston) to form General Electric. In terms of capitalization, GE has become the world's second largest company, comprising six component businesses: GE Commercial Finance; GE Healthcare; GE Industrial; GE Infrastructure; GE Money; and NBC Universal (a global media and entertainment company). Its headquarters are in Fairfield, Connecticut.
