Genovese, Eugene D

Genovese, Eugene D(ominick) (1930– )

US academic and historian, known for his Marxist approach to historical analysis. His works on American slavery include Roll Jordan Roll: The World the Slaves Made (1974), a document of the slaves' daily life, which won the Bancroft (1975), among other awards. He was born in New York City. Genovese was educated at Brooklyn College and Columbia University, where he gained his PhD in 1959. He has taught at Rutgers University in New Jersey, Sir George Williams University in Montréal, and the University of Rochester in New York.
