Gentile da Fabriano (c. 1370-c. 1427)

Italian painter of frescoes and altarpieces who worked in a Gothic style uninfluenced by the fashions of contemporary Florence. Gentile was active in Venice, Florence, Siena, Orvieto, and Rome and collaborated with the artists Pisanello and Jacopo Bellini. His Adoration of the Magi (1423; Uffizi, Florence), painted for the church of Santa Trinità in Florence, is typically rich in detail and colour.

He worked in Venice 1408-14 on frescoes for the Doge's Palace and was the master of Jacopo Bellini. Other notable works are the altarpiece of the Quaratesi family (1425), of which the centre panel, Madonna and Child, is in the British Royal Collection and the wings and other panels in the Uffizi and Vatican galleries; and a Madonna with Saints (Berlin). His last work was a series of frescoes (since destroyed) for S Giovanni in Laterano, Rome. These were finished by Pisanello, who was influenced by Gentile's Gothic manner.
