geodesy

Science of measuring and mapping Earth's surface for making maps and correlating geological, gravitational, and magnetic measurements. Geodetic surveys, formerly carried out by means of various measuring techniques on the surface, are now commonly made by using radio signals and laser beams from orbiting satellites (see global positioning system).
