George, Walter (1858–1943)
| British athlete and one of the greatest long-distance runners of all time. As an amateur he won ten British Championships (four in a single meeting). After turning professional, in 1886 he ran the mile in 4 min 12.75 sec (previous record: 4 min18.4 sec), a time unbeaten till 1915. |
