Suburb of Manchester, England, beside the River Bollin, 13 km/8 mi southwest of the city centre; population (2001) 15,300. A residential area close to the Cheshire border, Hale is part of Greater Manchester Metropolitan County.

Founded by George Ellery Hale, a scientist who helped revolutionize astronomy, the Mount Wilson Observatory has played an important scientific role since it opened in 1904.
I think that the California dominance of the prize is a testament to the foresight of certain individuals, like George Ellery Hale for Caltech, who saw California as a place where great institutions could be fostered and then worked diligently to make their visions manifest.
