Dallas, George Mifflin (1792–1864)

US diplomat and politician. He entered the diplomatic service 1837, and acted as US ambassador to Russia for two years. He was vice-president of the USA 1845–49, and ambassador to Great Britain 1856–61.

Dallas was born in Philadelphia, graduated from Princeton 1810, and became a lawyer 1813. He represented Pennsylvania in the Senate 1831–33, and was attorney general of Pennsylvania 1833–35. He wrote Series of Letters from London 1869 and a life of his father, Alexander Dallas.
