George of Podebrad (1420–1471)

King of Bohemia. In 1452 he became regent for Ladislas Posthumus, and was elected his successor in 1458. He was excommunicated by Pope Pius II in 1463 and by Pope Paul II in 1466 for failing to lead the country back to the Roman Catholic Church. War broke out with Matthias Corvinus and the Hungarians, but peace was concluded c. 1467. George of Podebrad entertained grand plans for European cooperation against the Turks, but his main achievement was to restore stability and prosperity to Bohemia. George was born in Podebrady, Bohemia.
