George, Lake

Alpine lake in northeast New York State, 64 km/40 mi north of Saratoga in the Adirondack Mountains, connected with Lake Champlain by Ticonderoga Creek. It has beautiful scenery, and the town of Lake George is a popular summer resort.

The lake was named in honour of King George II by General William Johnson in 1755. James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans (1826) was based on the Battle of Lake George fought here in 1755.
