Gerard, John (1545–1612)

English herbalist and gardener. In 1596 he published a catalogue of plants in his garden in Holborn, London, and the following year his Herball, the woodcut illustrations provided by a printer in Frankfurt.

Born in Nantwich, Gerard travelled abroad before settling in Holborn to pursue his medical career as a barber-surgeon and to keep a large physic garden. In 1607 he became master of the Company of Barber-Surgeons.

His catalogue, Catalogus arborum fruticum ac plantarum ... in horto Joannis Gerardi.../Catalogue of the Fruiting Trees and Plants ... in the Garden of John Gerard.., listed over 1100 varieties. His Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes owes a great deal to Dodoens.
