Though he achieved fame and fortune in his lifetime and had many students, among them Gerard Dou, Ferdinand Bol, and Carel Fabritius, the artist came to know personal tragedy. The subject of some of these representations owned by Sylvius, a large finely-painted Quack Doctor by Gerard Dou and a smaller coarser one byAdriaen Brouwer, also tell us something about the sense of humor of this celebrated physician. Thus Gerard Dou is divorced from the tradition of "fine" painting he inaugurated, although that mode receives more notice. |
