Dou, Gerrit (Gerard) (1613–1675)

Dutch genre painter. A pupil of Rembrandt, he is known for small domestic interiors, minutely observed. His teacher's influence can be clearly seen in Tobit 1632–33 (National Gallery, London).

Doub was born in Leiden, where he founded a painters' guild with Jan Steen. His many pupils included Gabriel Metsu.

The subject of some of these representations owned by Sylvius, a large finely-painted Quack Doctor by Gerard Dou and a smaller coarser one byAdriaen Brouwer, also tell us something about the sense of humor of this celebrated physician.
Thus Gerard Dou is divorced from the tradition of "fine" painting he inaugurated, although that mode receives more notice.
