Gerasa

Ancient city 90 km/56 mi from Jerusalem. It is among the mountains of Gilead, about 32 km/20 mi east of Jordan. It was one of the ten cities of the ancient league Decapolis.

Gerasa was a bishop's see in the Christian era. The ruined forum, colonnaded streets, theatres, and temple of Artemis date probably from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

In 83 BC Gerasa was captured by the Maccabean (Maccabee) Alexander Jannai. It was rebuilt by the Romans 65 BC. It was prominent in the reigns of the emperors Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius AD 138–80.
