Germain, Sophie (Marie) (1776-1831)

French mathematician, born in Paris. Although she was not allowed to study at the newly opened Ecole Polytechnique, she corresponded with the mathematicians Joseph Lagrange and Karl Gauss. She is remembered for work she carried out in studying Fermat's principle.
