| Even in the German Democratic Republic, where socialism supposedly made matters of personal sexual morality less pressing, Siegfried Schnabl's 1969 Mann und Frau intim (Man and Woman Intimately) was the biggest-selling title of any book in East German history (the nearest competitor was a book on gardening). Professor Bytwerk also underscores how even though Nazi and German Democratic Republic propaganda took diametrically opposing stands, the mechanics, dynamics, and consequences of their propaganda efforts were far more similar than dissimilar. This second part is based on interviews with former East Germans, starting with intellectuals who had leadership ambitions, through engaging grandmothers who humanize German history for the reader, to those educated Germans whose goal had been to survive as respectable and well-to-do members of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) society. |
