10) The etymological dictionary of Germanic strong verbs by Seebold (1970) (Vergleichendes und etymologisches Worterbuch der germanischen starken Verben) was consulted to verify the Proto-Germanic root forms which were susceptible to the operation of Verner's Law and could be reflected in Old English. The present paper is not an attempt at reviewing the many theories (2) that have been advanced; rather, it approaches the data from a slightly different perspective, hoping to shed light on the external conditions of the split which occurred within the Germanic strong verbs class VII. |
