Germanicus Caesar (15 BCAD 19)

A marble bust of the Roman general Germanicus Caesar. The name ‘Caesar’ was at that time still a name and not yet a title, and Germanicus was never emperor, despite his military ability and popularity.

Roman general. He was the adopted son of the emperor Tiberius and married the emperor Augustus' granddaughter Agrippina. Although he refused the suggestion of his troops that he claim the throne on the death of Augustus, his military victories in Germany made Tiberius jealous. Sent to the Middle East, he died near Antioch, possibly murdered at the instigation of Tiberius. He was the father of Caligula and Agrippina, mother of Nero.
