Germantown

Suburb of northwestern Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Once an independent town, it was founded in 1683 by 13 Mennonite families from Germany, led by Francis Pastorius. During the American Revolution George Washington was defeated by the British at the Battle of Germantown in October 1777.

Germantown contains many historic houses, including Cliveden House (1763), built for Benjamin Chew, who was imprisoned as a loyalist in 1777 for giving shelter to British troops at the Battle of Germantown; and the Deshler-Morris House (built 1773), the residence of President George Washington 1793–94, when Philadelphia was the capital of the USA. The first paper mill in America was built in Germantown in 1690, and the first European-language Bible printed in America was published here in 1743.
