Germanus of Auxerre, St (c. 378–448)

French cleric. He became an ascetic when he was elected bishop of Auxerre in 418. As bishop, he visited Britain in 430 and 447 to campaign against the teaching of the theologian Pelagius.

Germanus was from a noble family of Auxerre and became an advocate in Rome. He led Christian Britons to a bloodless victory over a combined force of Picts and Saxons, in modern-day Powys. He died in Ravenna, Italy.
